20 vital tips for staying healthy while travelling

Travelling is medicine for the mind, body and soul, but it’s not always glamourous. Many big adventures come with their fair share of bumps, bruises, germs and stresses. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of leaving the comforts of home. But to keep your mind, body and spirit in top condition, we’ve put together some advice on how to stay healthy while travelling.

1. Hiking is the best travel workout

Along with obvious stamina and muscular benefits, there is something soothing to the mind that comes with hiking through nature. Imagine trying to be stressed after a scenic hike up to a spectacular view – impossible!

2. Make time to indulge

Part of taking care of your body and soul is by enjoying yourself, so live a little! Travelling will change your life, and part of that is experiencing wonders of the world. Don’t be afraid to reward yourself with a well-earned treat after a long day of exploring.

3. Travel yoga

There’s perhaps nothing that keeps your mind, body and spirit all finely tuned quite as well as yoga. It can improve the quality of your sleep, help you deal with circulation problems from long journeys, and help you bond with other travellers as you do it together. Tonnes of hostels offer yoga classes as part of the travelling experience!

4. Enough sleep is VITAL

Never underestimate the importance of enough sleep while travelling. Unless you’re on a fast-paced city break, in most cases backpacking is a marathon rather than a sprint. Always plan time into your itineraries for breaks and rest, so you can recharge your batteries.

5. Time for a digital detox?

A simple way to give your mind and soul a little refresher is to have a detox from the world of digital. People who have travelled in less developed countries will testify that some of the happiest people in the world are those with less possessions than us lucky travellers.

6. Stay hydrated

It sounds simple but it’s quite scary how easily people can become dehydrated from all sun and sweat with no H2O! If you’re worried about the local water quality, take some water purification tablets with you. Just make sure you keep hydrated!

7. Learn how to eat healthy on your travels

It can take some discipline while travelling, but eating well is so important in keeping healthy. Take the time to stay focused on getting good nutrition as often as you can. It won’t always be possible, but try to ensure that you’re not indulging in unhealthy foods too often.

8. Walk as much as you can

You’d be surprised at how easy it is to keep your metabolism moving and your state on mind positive by just walking. City breaks make it easy to stroll around, but it’s definitely doable in remote locations too. Not only that, you’ll also be saving some pennies on transportation. Win win!

9. Pace yourself

Don’t stretch yourself by trying to see every little thing and do every single activity – you’ll spend most of your trip stressed. Chill out a little and give yourself some “me” time. Leave some room each day for spontaneous adventures to pop up.

10. Open your mind and heart

Something that makes travel so incredible is its ability to open our minds and hearts. Experiencing and learning about other cultures brings awareness and peace to mind. Part of being healthy is developing a healthy view of the world.

11. Keep learning and reading

Part of staying healthy is staying active, and that applies to your mind as well as your body. Keep reading and keep learning. A sharp and healthy mind will help you to navigate through life’s challenges, so don’t be unenthused to grow your knowledge when you’re on the road.

12. Write

Emotional health links so closely to physical well-being. Take some time to write – about your adventures, hardships and feelings. Write to travel buddies you meet along the way, or loved ones back at home. Even create a blog and publish your real-life travel tips.

13. Keep clean and fresh

No matter where you are, stay healthy by keeping clean! Wash your clothes and your body, take hand sanitiser everywhere with you, and protect yourself from pesky bugs that are hell bent on impeding your journey.

14. Understand basic first aid

Another simple yet important point, especially while adventuring in less developed countries – know your first aid. Being able to assess a situation quickly and calmly and working to fix it could possibly even mean the difference between life and death. Heaven forbid a situation such as this arises, but at least be prepared!

15. Listen to other travellers

Wanderers across the globe are bursting with great advice – listen to them! Many people you meet on your journey will have tips and stories to share. Some of the best advice related to travel you’ll ever discover is found in the social spaces and dorms of backpacker hostels.

16. Be creative

Creativity is the mind, body and spirit’s way of expressing feelings, emotions, ideas and passions. Ways that you can express your creativity include through art, photography, music, writing, and so on.

17. Protect your skin

There isn’t much that beats a glowing tan, but it is possible to get too much sun. You don’t want to be hoisting your backpack up a mountain or strapping on a bungee harness while covered in red blisters. Make sure you have a strong sun cream game!

18. Use coconut oil

Using coconut oil is a really travel-friendly and easy way keep your skin and hair feeling fresh and nourished while traveling. It’s also great to cook with, if you ever find yourself cooking up some meals in your hostel.

19. Safety first

Make sure you’re aware of the environment of the places you’re visiting, and prepare accordingly. Be alert and vigilant, so you aren’t caught off guard. The world is much safer than non-travellers think, but safety does partly come from being sensible and careful.

20. Learn to love yourself
