America is big. Huge in fact. It would take a lifetime to discover all of it. There are so many endless places to visit and things to do that you might feel overwhelmed by all of the options on offer. From stunning landscapes to soul food delights, I have created the ultimate bucket list of things you must experience in the USA.
Cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge
Regarded as one of the wonders of the modern world, San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge should be on everyone’s bucket list. This iconic US landmark will sweep you away with its magnificent views and impressive design. Rent a bike and pedal over it, from San Francisco to Sausalito.
Eat a real New York slice of pizza
It’s no secret that New Yorkers love their pizza, and we so know why. Famous for humongous slices, dribbling cheese and crisp crusts, New York pizza is a must for any foodie. You could get fancy, but I think the best slice of pizza is one that costs $3 from a counter.
Burning Man festival in Nevada
Not for the faint-hearted, Burning Man is a wonderfully weird annual festival, transforming the Black Rock Desert into a temporary metropolis where anything goes. Themed camps, artistic illustrations and friendly strangers populate the space.
Stroll Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier in LA
From sampling mouth watering delicacies to watching street performers, there are so many fabulous sights in this scenic stroll in LA. Ride the Santa Monica Ferris wheel at sunset – the views are just something else.
See the Autumn foliage in New England
Historic and charming at any time of year, you won’t be alone on a leaf-peeping road trip in New England. But there’s more than enough autumnal glory for everyone. Start in Boston and make your way through gorgeous coloured trees and woodlands that glow like a sunset.
Visit Yosemite National Park
Yosemite has a rich range of natural splendours – from steely mountain ridges to sulphurous geysers. It’s also home to North America’s highest waterfall, Yosemite Falls. For anyone who wants some breath-taking views, this National Park is full of them.
Go to an American sporting event
Baseball, basketball, football… Take your pick! Every American sporting event has a few common features that make them unlike a game you’ll attend elsewhere – outrageous mascots and a sing-a-long national anthem are to name a few.
Be dazzled by Hollywood
For years, Hollywood has drawn in tourists with its world-famous landmarks and attractions, such as Hollywood Bowl, Paramount Pictures and of course the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s one of the top American places to visit, especially for those who love celebrities.
Compare Philly cheesesteaks from rivals Pat’s and Geno’s
For those who haven’t ever tried a Philly cheesesteak, the Pennsylvanian’s delight consists of thin beefsteak slices smothered in melted cheese and sandwiched in a long hoagie roll. Pat’s and Geno’s, situated across from one another, are the two most popular places to sample Philly’s famous sandwich. Test out both so you can pick your team – we’re team Geno’s.
Marvel at the Grand Canyon
Whether you raft along the Colorado river, or just peer down from one of the many viewing points, the Grand Canyon has an international tour. It brings in everyone from hikers and adventurers, to tick-box tourists. It will leave you in awe, with its jaw-dropping natural beauty and surreal sights.
Get your inner child out at Disney World
Strap on your Mickey Mouse ears and head for Orlando, AKA the happiest place on earth. Walt Disney World offers endless exciting attractions and experiences for both kids and adults who are young at heart.
Thrift shop in Portland
Portland is a hipster’s paradise, full of coffee shops and organic restaurants. The vintage shopping scene in the city is excellent. Check out The Red Light, Xtabay and Magpie, where you can pick up adorable vintage items.
Visit Mount Rushmore
It might be smaller than you expect, but it’s still fantastic. For 14 years, sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers carved this mountain into a quartet of presidents who have helped shape the history of America. Get an up close look and experience one of the coolest patriotic things to do in the USA.
Admire the northern lights in Alaska
This is one of the most surreal experiences to have in America. Just make sure you go between October and April when it’s dark all of the time.
Take a wine tour in Santa Barbara
Take a picnic tour and get bussed around to four different wineries. Or grab a bike on a guided tour and cruise through the canyons, then put your kickstand down to taste wine and olive oil. Either way… It’s a great experience.
Eat soul food in the South
Quit any intentions of healthy eating when you’re in the south, and feed your soul with the ultimate comfort food. Head to Gus’s for some fried chicken that will leave you delighted. More treats include gooey mac and cheese, bbq favourites and old-fashioned banana pudding. Yuuuuum.
Listen to live jazz in New Orleans
Lively jazz spots and intimate blues clubs are found in all corners of this Louisiana city. If there’s a city that knows how to party, it’s New Orleans. And the best part? New Orleans bars aren’t required to close, meaning the party truly never stops.
Visit the volcanoes in Hawaii
Hawaii isn’t just the home for surfers galore. You can catch plenty of red-hot, bubbling molten lava on the Big Island in Hawaii, with there being five active volcanoes. There are a number of ways to see it – by helicopter, by bicycle or on foot.
Roll the dice in Vegas
Try on the American high-roller lifestyle only found in Las Vegas. Cheesy Elvis impersonators, neon-lit fountains and endless gambling options are only the tip of the iceberg in Sin City. There are plenty of spots to catch your attention in America’s glamourous night time playground.
Feel the mist of Niagara Falls
It might be one of the biggest tourist traps, but it’s one you want to get caught in. With its 173-foot drops and over 3 million cubic feet of water, come here and experience something spectacular.
